P.S.- I now have 3 locations...the upload speeds are 3000/768/256, and I
will probably be working on contacting some customers of mine and asking if
they wouldn't mind contributing some of their bandwidth. If so, then I will
be able to (finally) use some of those old computers that I have in my
basement...YAY!

K, im very limited on my knowledge of setting up things of this sort...still
mainly a windoze kid, but trying my hand in different distros of linux. I
gave up on trying to pull all the files off the server as-is when it took 3
hours to simply list everything in the dir's...if someone could set me with
either a list of specific files you want me to have available such as
high-use or large files or a .tar of all the files or even set up a time
when I can come by with a drive to transfer the files off the server, then
we can move forward from there. Just drop me a line at rob at fauls.com. Also,
as a note, I am changing my ale subscription from this address to
ale at fauls.com as of whenever that account gets activated.

Running a tracker and seeder is something that I can do on the ftp
server. I have used it as a client/seeder for a few things in the
past. I'll get it set up and people can make torrents against it, but
I will restrict it to only allow known torrents to keep others from
just leeching on.

that's

procedure

> Lol, in that case, then I can also make available a couple low-bandwidth
> lines that I have...finally, I can test out my florida upload! If one of
> the guys that's directly involved could drop me a line and let me know
what
> all you guys want me to load or if I should just mirror your ftp, I will
set
> things up.

> That is a perfect addition to a bittorrent stream.
>
> If ftp.ale.org starts supporting bittorrent downloads and runs the
> tracker, then secondary servers like the below simply aggregate into
> the overall swarm bandwidth. When they are online others can get
> file segments from the secondary servers. If they go offline, it
> simply reduces the bandwidth of the swarm until the come back online.

> > Michael,
> > I wanted to say thanks for the service you provide for all of us. I use
> > ftp.ale.org for SUSE security updates all the time,
> > and occasionally for software installation sources for Yast2 in SUSE.
> > I'd love to see the pub/projects/Mozilla directories
> > on the ftp.suse.com server mirrored on ftp.ale.org sometime if that is
> > possible.
> > Merry Christmas,

> > >I instituted a new max user limit on the ftp daemon on ftp.ale.org. I
> > >did this because it's the .iso downloads that are really taking up the
> > >most bandwidth. I also redirect .isos on the http port to the ftp
> > >port so that all .isos will go over ftp.
> > >
> > >I think this will increase the overall transfer rate at which people
> > >download on the server given that they can connect to it in the first
> > >place via ftp (I got over 1mbyte/s or 1000kb/s on my work connection).
> > > I've already noticed that it does sit at about the max users on ftp,
> > >but also hovers close to the rate cap on it.
> > >
> > >Overall http transfers are real fast and if you're patient ftp
> > >transfers are really fast as well.
> > >
> > >I will continue to keep an eye on it to see if I can raise the max
users
> > again.
