Unfortunately, that isn't an option for me. If I want to work from
home then I have to use the corporate VPN.

I have used it, but never on this box, only on a single CPU i686. I'd
love to see if I can get it to work on my SMP box, but maybe I can't.
I haven't seem the docs that says they can't do SMP--how sad. With
hyperthreading CPUs almost everywhere, now, SMP systems will be
everwhere.
