A bit more data:

For either linux-2.6.10-1.770_FC3 or my newly-built linux-2.6.11.6 from
kernel sources, I have the same booting problem, logged thus:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++
...
Starting Red Hat nash version 4.1.18
Unable to find device-mapper major/minor
/dev/mapper/control: open failed
Is device-mapper missing from kernel?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++

Good question.

All my grub.conf entries reference 'root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00'
This file exists as a soft-link to: '/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00

There is a file '/boot/grub/device.map', but I don't know if it's useful or
used. The file '/dev/mapper/control' exists as a character device.

All these have today's date (when I installed 2.6.11.6).

The original as installed by FC-3 still boots, but not my two updates.

Where do I go from here?

TIA.

JM> I ran 'up2date' on a fresh install of FC-3 and among the updates were
JM> 'vmlinuz-2.6.10-1.770_FC3' and its associated 'config-...', 'initrd-...'
JM> and 'System.map-...'.
