I believe you can email an AT&T or Cingular phone at [number]@mmode.com

Caveat: While many AT&T plans include free inbound messages, Cingular 
charges $0.10 for inbound or outbound messages. Cingular does offer 
messaging plans as an add-on to your primary plan. When I spoke to 
"AT&T" in February, she did not have an answer when I asked what 
happens if you start receiving spam on your cell phone.
