Safeco moves IT offshore

 Safeco begins IT offshoring program

Seattle - Employees in Safeco's Information Technology Department have
a new storm on the horizon to worry about, and it has nothing to do
with hurricane season. The company has undertaken a new outsourcing
initiative dubbed "SmartSource," which will involve using offshore
vendors. Safeco is a nation wide insurance and investment company
headquartered in Seattle Washington.

On September 20th, an e-mail, written by Kevin Lee, Safeco's new
sourcing manager, outlined the steps to be taken as the company
launches the new outsourcing program. "The name is meant to convey
that a thoughtful approach will be taken in finding IT resources to
deliver business capabilities. It's about sourcing not just about
outsourcing." In the note, Lee tells employees that "some vendor
resources will be... offshore." The e-mail does not list the projects
that will be outsourced or the number of employees that might lose
their jobs due to the new moves. WashTech has heard rumors in the past
several months that Safeco was planning on moving some IT functions
offshore, but those rumors could not be confirmed until now.
