You missed this point:
"GMail has not bothered to warn those people that send email to GMail
users"

Unless GMail is going to send an opt-in request before forwarding mail sent to GMail accounts, most people won't even know to go to <a  rel="nofollow" href="http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/privacy.html";>http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/privacy.html</a>
