Different systems. If I were to run my outbound data through a remote
firewall and virus scanner, then I have no way of determining what those
remote machines do with the data. However, since the programs reside on my
harddrive and my memory, I can analyze and control them myself. Google
doesn't run from my harddrive or memory. It is a remote system. And yes,
Google does sift through each and every message sent and received to and
from GMail.

Um, not even related. You might be thinking of a quantum mechanics law
that states essentially that the act of observing something changes it.
But in this case, nope. Just as seeing a boulder on the side of a cliff
doesn't change it. ;c)
