this computer has one PCI and three ISA slots, all are in use. one ISA slot is
taken by a 3Com 3c509 NIC, which was easily configured (Mandrake 9.2.1). i can
configure the usb NIC no problem, but in stress tests, it drops its network
connection after a minute or so. usually, i'll test it by transferring a large
amt of data (1-200Mb). have not had any success, and the only cure is to
unplug/reinsert the usb NIC. linux doesn't think there is a problem (none of
the typical monitors notice that the network is unreachable, even though ping
doesn't work).

i've googled and found no answers so far. any clues anybody? i seem to recall
this may be a hotplug issue...
