Hey Courtney,
Check your DISPLAY variable.
keithh at zeus:~> echo $DISPLAY
:0.0
keithh at zeus:~>
Format should be: hostname:xserver#.screen#
Typically, running on your local desktop, hostname is blank (but the colon is still important!), xserver# is zero, and screen# is zero (or omitted, drop the 'dot').
Try this:
export DISPLAY=:0
and then run acroread
