[ale] Any Epson photo1280 users?

I just got an Epson 1280 ink-jet printer at a garage sale. I haven't had
much luck getting quality prints out of if from Linux, though my old Epson
740i gives quite good results (after several months' flailing). I use
lpRNG and the GIMPrint driver for both. Generally I'm printing from GIMP.
I get mediocre colors and unless, I choose unidirectonal printing, nasty
grid patterns on my prints.

It prints very well from MsWin using the manufacturer's drivers and the
copy of Photoshop 'Elements' I got with the printer.

Anyone using this printer for "photo quality" work [whatever that means!]
from Linux?

What options, drivers, and media work well for you?
