Why not just set the immutable bit on that directory.  I do this on all
of the following:
  /bin
  /boot
  /lib
  /lib/modules
  /sbin
  /usr/bin
  /usr/lib
  /usr/sbin

There are plenty of other important directories, but those are the only
ones that worry me.
