Well I'm fairly sure it's not "OK", but I've beaten this horse before...to
no avail. Deliberately circumventing security mechanisms is usually against
policy...but maybe these folks were just kidding. Either way, the solution
mentioned above would be the most acceptable to me as a security manager. I
would be likely to look the other way as there is little risk to my network
from this type of setup. Before anyone jumps to the conclusion that I am one
of the evil web blocking nazis, let me state for the record that I have
never advocated nor have I ever implemented any such solution for any client
or employer. It only leads to situations like this, where you have your
employees actively trying to find holes in the system just so they can surf
the Internet. In my experience, the canned rules usually are built around
political correctness and typically display a certain amount of left wing
bias as it relates to certain topics. Either your employees are responsible,
or they're not. Let them have full unfettered access. Regulation of web
surfing is a supervisory issue, not a technical one.
