The book cited below may provide a useful perspective about this. I
haven't read it, but it looks interesting. It popped up as a
"recommendation" on Amazon as I was searching for books on the
Montessori method.

PS - Speaking of video games, my 7-year old just won herself
a Gameboy Advance SP Platinum by virtue of selling several
hundred bucks worth of, not to put too fine a point on it,
crap for a school fundraiser. She then bought the Namco
Museum cartridge, and I have since just about worn out the
buttons playing Galaga. What I wouldn't give for a functional
set of Galaga ROMs for MAME...
