That's what I thought. <grin> <sigh>

I am copying them using the GUI <drag/drop>
All I want to do is make a backup copy. Then, when I change
the master file (I'm editing a script for publication) I want
to save it _over top_ of the existing file on the zip platter.
That is, I am not interested in documenting/tracking small
revisions of the text. The master file stays on the hard drive.

Full path to the backup copy is this:
/misc/zip/Scripts/wake/wake1.sxw

I do not know exactly why or how this worked, but I have
managed to get this to work (that is, I can overwrite the existing
file on the zip platter with an updated version of the same
file.) I still get a warning that the OS can not change the
perms on the file on the zip drive, but at least now it is
doing the rewrite. What I did was change the applicable line
in /etc/auto.misc to read umount=7.

Still have no clue how come, as root, I can't change the 
perms on the files on the zip platter.
