BUT...no other services will connect. First I tried getting my email
via Thunderbird on the WinXP box. It couldn't connect to either email
(fastmail.fm or my own domain). Server kept timing out. Hmmmm. I did
change the SMTP settings to reflect the values for Alltel, but left
everything else the same. Tech support was no help on this. They said
it 'should just work'. They say no ports are blocked by default with
the PPPoE accounts. I then connected my SUSE 9.1 desktop (modem to
Netgear router to desktop). Same deal. Can't get email via Evolution
(server timeouts) and Kopete can't connect either.
Aaaarrggh! This is my first time with DSL (always had dial-up or cable
in the past). I might be overlooking something simple, but nothing
obvious has hit me yet. I'm hoping someone can provide some next steps
as to what to check. Could it be something the provider is doing? I'm
using a SpeedStream 5200 modem if that helps.
Thanks.
