ok, i usually use fdisk/cfdisk to partition but thought i would try QTParted.  i must say i am impressed.  i just partitioned an external usb drive (needed linux partitions to preserve permissions) so i could do some remastering. i fired up a copy of "System Rescue CD" and had no problems with it finding my usb drive or resizing/creating the new partitions.
