Speculation at the time was twofold: 1) M$ was acquiring and removing Linux based &quot;obstacles&quot; from it's projected market 2) M$ now has the ability to offer native virus protection in its next release (possibly Longhorn?) effectively cutting out the need for Norton/McAffee. I doubt they would be able to pull the second one off. It would start 
the Anti-Trust, monopoly thing all over again for them. I'm sure Norton 
wouldn't stand by and watch that happen.
