> would someone mind telling me why an "_" in a server name would cause trouble?  i've not noticed it before, but with some email programs (mozilla thunderbird) it is raising sand about the server name (email_server).  it doesn't do this with a "-" and i was wondering if i was breaking some rule/law/karma.

As long as what you name is a letter followed by letters, numbers, or 
hyphens, ending with a letter or number, yes. Underscores are not 
allowed....
