Agreed - there was a news story a fews years back where a Texan home owner shot 
a drunk exchange student who was beating on his door.

IIRC, Georgia law also has a clause that allows deadly force to be used if 
someone is "violently and precipitiously" atetmpting to enter a house (IOW, 
kicking the door in).

In short, local laws may allow use of deadly force in cases not of immediate 
direct danger to life and limb.
