It was more than likely a spoofed email carrying a windows based virus. 
  I assure you, Vernard is unlikely to have an infected windows computer.

Basically, a windows computer get's infected by a virus.  The virus then 
scans the outlook address book of the infected machine and sends an 
email out to unsuspecting people with a spoofed From: email address as well.
