It's likely that you don't have pkg-config installed, at least for SuSE. 
  It's in the package pkgconfig. (pkgconfig-0.15.0-104 to be specific, 
for SuSE 9.0)

I've noted that you're running from cd, so I'm not sure how you're get 
around this issue.
