[ale] Gnome sound problem

I use KDE most of the time now however I try using gnome every now and 
then. One of my complaints with gnome is that under both redhat and 
debian the sound is unavailable for more than I thing at a time. I just 
tried to play a game (Armgetron) under gnome with the same result. 
System sounds work but the game is silent. If I try to send a sound 
file to dsp I get a device busy error. Under KDE sound is problem free. 
Is there a trick to using sound under gnome so that more that one 
program can access /dev/dsp?
