If you've tried it with no luck, then you might need to upgrade SANE.
Check the SANE site for compatibility as suggested and then upgrade if
needed. You might look at http://packman.links2linux.org/ for binary
rpms for SuSE of updated packages. They have 1.0.11 for 8.1 or 1.0.12
for 8.2.
