It seems like it would be less trouble/risk-of-harm to hook up a second
powersupply, feeding from a UPS, and connect it's output (12/5vdc)
inline. Then just unplug the old powersupply.
I don't know for sure, but I think that powersupplies have some internal
components that prevent crossover.
