[ale] Remote Sound

I'm aware of two solutions for "remote sound".  aRts, which appears to be 
tightly associated with KDE, but not necessarily exclusively, and EsounD, 
which comes from Enlightment (I think).

However, there appears to very little online information about either one.  
What experiences do people have with these?  What about applications that 
support them?

Here's the setup I'm looking to use it in:

Laptop (with speakers) -- using XDMCP, logs into -- desktop system, where most 
apps run.
