The basic rules:
1. Run Windows 2000 or Windows XP as a minimum.
2. Do not run as Administrator, create a restricted user account.
3. Install Mozilla. Don't use IE except for #4. Don't use Outlook or OE.
4. Hit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com daily. Install critical updates
5. Install security/virus software. I recommend Norton Internet Security
which includes anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, anti-spam, and content
filtering.
More advanced rules:
6. Disable all unused services
7. Configure explorer to show file extensions and hidden files
8. Enable logging of security events
9. Use MS Baseline Security analyzer to verify settings
10. Insert Knoppix CD daily for training.
