KDE ?  GNOME ?

  Fluxbox! ,but any of the lightweight, "as long as I
can fire up a browser and run java" will work.

Because sometimes a GUI is the way.  But it should be
the treat not the meat for the enthusiast.

Note:  When people ask me about linux and I do
installs for first time users ... _They_ get KDE.
