Just noticed this discussion.  Yes, I wrote the article, and got some positive feedback (dispite some choppy editing from LJ).  

However most of the feedback sounded like "why didn't you write about Gnome Wave Cleaner???!!!" which I didn't know about when I started dubbing LPs in the fall of 2001.  In fact, it's just become stable the last few months.  Besides, I was aiming for the use of xmcd2make for encoding so using a GUI for just one step wasn't very appealing.  xmcd2make reads the song info from an xmcd file, the track info from the tracks file, and generates a Makefile.  Then a simple "make" will split the LP side into wav files and encode each wav file to ogg of mp3 with the artist & title info.  Very handy!

Recently I've tried to learn the GWC interface from the cryptic help files, and found it quite nice!  The most noticeable advantage over gramofile is the ability to filter only portions of the file.  The author is quite focused on sound quality, offering 2 levels of declick, plus dehiss, denoise, etc.

So at this point, I would certainly recommend giving GWC a try:  http://gwc.sourceforge.net/
