[ale] rpmnew files

Can someone shed some light on how config files with .rpmnew and
.rpmsave files are created and how a user should treat them? For
example, can .rpmsave files be deleted? Are you supposed to replace your
current config file with the .rpmnew version? Or should you just ignore
them? I am using RedHat 7.1.
