[ale] Debian Install Woes

I just installed Debian 30r1 and seem to be having some probs w/ it.  It never makes it to xdm.

What is the default runlevel for Debian?  
Is the "X" init level still 5 in Debian?
Any other advice you can offer?

I've only used Mandrake 7-9, RedHat 5.2/7.3, Solaris & HP-UX...this is the first time I've messed w/ Debian.  Any/all advice is welcomed.
