Chris,

I haven't, but if you could log into the external box with ssh -X, you
could set the $DISPLAY (although I think ssh does this for your) and start
up X from there and have it display on your local machine.

You'd first have to start and X server locally, but not too difficult. 
I've done this before and run a full gnome-session from work on my home
machine.  Not overwhelmingly fast....
