dd if=/dev/zero of=YOUR_FILENAME bs=1024 count=NUMBER_OF_KBYTES
This works for me. If you're using solaris, you can always use mkfile. . .
mkfile 200m foo; mkfile 20k bar; mkfile 1b baz
