I think you'll need more than just firewire.  Doesn't the iPod use some
proprietary interface and/or protocol?

I use a program called rioutil (http://rioutil.sourceforge.net) to
manage tracks on my Rio S10.  This is relevant because the primary
developer of rioutil is also working on a project called upod
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/upod/).  It's in a very early stage of
development (nothing has been released yet) but maybe it's a good place
to start looking...
