There's an easy solution to that particular problem. It's sort of a
human autonomic nervous system hack. Plug in a soldering iron, let it
heat up, and then pick it up by one end, choosing the end at random
(perhaps by grabbing bits out of /dev/urandom).  Repeat several times.
If you're smart enough to develop software, then it's nearly certain
that eventually, you will figure out which end is the correct one :-)
