[ale] Question for perl gurus

This is going to sound strange from me, but rather than doing it in
perl look for the expect timed-run utility.


Not that you couldn't do it in perl.  If you want to go that route
look for the IPC::Run module from CPAN, and read perldoc perlipc for
how to use alarm().
