I just went through this, and perhaps the same method will work. I booted
RH-7.3, and as 'su' I ran 'grub-install --recheck'. This brought back the
GRUB splash screen. I had replaced my one and only M$Win installation (a
crufty '95') and had repartitioned 'hda' as part of the process. I made no
changes to '/boot/grub/grub.conf' before, during, or after.
I also got back the choice of Linux kernels that was reflected in my
'grub.conf' even though I had an older kernel on my boot diskette.
HTH.
