[ale] firewall testing

I am no security expert, but I would like to test out a firewall that I 
am configuring.  From what i gather, ipchains and iptables both block 
any ip (or maybe even mac address) that tries to do a port scan.  My 
question is how can i effectively test this firewall without being 
locked out of the machine afterward?
