[ale] KDM/XDM problem

I've had an "accidental upgrade", that's causing me some problems.

Normally, I run KDM on my desktop, and then I run "X -query" on my laptop,
so that I login to the desktop, and the laptop is nothing but a glorified
X display.
Well, I was upgrading a my desktop, and now I no longer get the login
dialog from KDM.  I do get the "standard X root background window" (the
ugly cross hatch thing), but nothing more.
I've looked through my log files but I can't find anything that points me
at the error.
Any ideas?
