I like the wysiwyg-before-html approach...use the wysiwyg to build his 
confidence about page composition in general, and then dive into the HTML 
to show him how it's really done.

Starting with html (without a good frame of reference) is the wrong way to 
go, IMHO.  If he were a bit older, it might be fine.
