If you only need protection for a desktop behind a dsl link (no need for
port forwarding, etc.), then I can recommend that you take a look at
gShield (http://muse.linuxmafia.org/gshield.html). It's a shell-script
based firewall with a simple configuration file. It pretty much does
the correct thing by default.
gshield can also handle port forwarding, black lists, white lists, and
more advanced stuff. Not having used these features, I cannot comment
on how good/easy they are.
