I typed xhost + prior to leaving the debian box.  The chain goes:

Debian box --> xhost +
telnet to a HP-UX box
on the HP-UX box, in c-shell - setenv DISPLAY x.x.x.x:0.0 (ip of debian box)
launch file

This works in the situation where in place of the debian (originating) box
is a sun box, or even a RedHat/Mandrake box.

Hope that clarifies a little.  The ssh -CX2, doesn't work either...it
prompts me for a password, i enter it, and it just hangs.
