[ale] debian + kde 3.1.1 (revisited..new box)

I am trying to install KDE 3.1.1 on another box (this time @ work).  I've updated my sources.list file to the appropriate mirror (http), did the apt-get update, and I have tried several things:

apt-get upgrade kde
apt-get upgrade kdebase (and the other packages).

It says that kdebase and the other package groups aren't installed, but when I run apt-get install kdebase, i get dependancy errors for the kdebase packages, even though it says it's not installed.

I even tried dpkg --purge kdebase

Lost again in Debian world,
