[ale] [OT]-ish: barcode readers

greetings!

I have the good fortune of inheiriting responsibility for maintaining the
physical inventory for ~300 boxes which frequently move among 3 datacenters and
whose hostnames, functions, etc. change constantly w/o me being told (yipee!). 
I actually used to program barcode readers for a major wireless carrier back in
91-92 (we used to call them "cellular" companies back then:) but I'm a little
out of touch w/that technology.

can anyone recomend a good, affordable, easy to use (program/download), reliable
barcode reader for this task?  I don't need wireless (actually couldn't use for
security reasons anyway) so serial, USB, flashcard or whatever else would be fine.
