[ale] Tools for proofing *NIX server?

I've heard many people referring to tools that will bang against a machine and 
find vulerabilities, though I can't remember any names.  I've got a box that 
I'm about to deploy and would like to run some hardening tests against it.  

Any suggestions/pointers?
