[ale] disappearing xterms

I have two boxes.  One exports an xterm to the other at boot from
inittab.  It is a "respawn" process, so if the process dies it gets
restarted immediately.

My problem is that the xterm disappears from the second box and doesn't
come back.  The process is still running on the first box, but not doing
anything.  If I kill the xterm, it does get correctly restarted.

What can be causeing this strange behavior?  What could make the window
go away, but not cause the xterm to die?

The boxes are remote from each other, network-wise, if that makes any
difference.
