Isn't that exactly what he did? He made a job for himself writing free
software. People that liked the software would pay do get printed
documentation, or the entire distribution on tape. And he made a
living at it. Later he got a genius grant, of course, but he did
exactly what you want him to do.
His views are stronger than mine, but give him credit. He believes in
something strongly enough that he did bet his livelyhood on it--and
won!
