I would guess that the fuzziness you are experiencing with the fonts is
the antialiasing that was added in GNOME2.The font preferences are
pretty sparse but you may be able to mess with them to make them a
little more legible. As far as graphics....I have no idea. Perhaps with
new themes they tried to smooth things out?
