[ale] OpenOrifice and Gnome

*Now* I am, after fiddling with the wretched thing for a couple hours.
The problem appears to be that Gnome doesn't understand pathnames
containing tilde characters. Once I expunged those from the PATH 
definition in ~/.profile, it worked.
