[ale] missing fonts

I am running SuSE 7.3 Professional on a Gateway Laptop and i am having 
font troubles.  My X doesn't seem to register that i have the standard 
fonts such as lucidiatypewriter (it's not a MAJOR issue because i have 
plenty of true type fonts).  the only reasonable standard fonts i have 
are "clean" and "fixed".  Can anyone tell me how to find/enable/obtain 
other standard fonts for my laptop?
