[ale] GRUB boot diskette problems

I'm using GRUB 0.91 on a Red Hat 7.3-based system (package grub-0.91-4 to be
specific). I'm attempting to create a GRUB boot diskette, using the
following commands straight outta the manual:

cd /boot/grub
dd if=stage1 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1
dd if=stage2 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 seek=1

But when I reboot the system using the diskette, I see "Geom error".

What am I doing wrong?
